Judge faces reprimand for pulling gun in courtroom
February 24th, 2010 @ 5:00pm
By Sam Penrod

LEHI -- A justice court judge in Lehi has been issued a public reprimand by the Utah Supreme Court after pulling out a handgun in his courtroom. The incident actually happened nearly a year ago, but action by the Supreme Court was only taken in recent weeks.

Judge Garry Sampson is the justice judge residents face for speeding tickets and other minor offenses, but his decision to pull out the gun has resulted in a public reprimand.

An investigation found that Sampson was "acting in joking manner," but he pointed a handgun at a court bailiff for several seconds, causing alarm to the court staff.

According the agreement released by the Utah Judicial Conduct Commission, the bailiff was jokingly threatening to toss water on the judge in a moment of horseplay on March 30 of last year. The judge responded by pulling out a handgun and pointing it at her, which, according to the report, frightened the baliff, a court clerk and a victim advocate who were all in the courtroom.

No one else saw what happened.

On Dec. 17, the Utah Supreme Court signed off on the agreement with the Judicial Conduct Commission to give Sampson a reprimand. He has agreed to never bring a gun to court again.

Justice judges are appointed by the city or county they represent. In Sampson's case, Lehi's administrators are quoted in the agreement as saying they support him through the reprimand.

KSL News attempted to ask Sampson for a response, and an employee of the justice court came outside and told us that he had no comment on the reprimand.

Bang bang, you're dead, haha.

With few narrow exceptions, it is against the law to ban guns from an establishment in Utard.

A bill was just passed making it legal for the concealed carry wussess to brandish the weapon when feeling threatened. So, next time the judge becomes hydrophobic, it's all good.

Utah man determined to get arrested gets his wish

The Associated Press
A man rebuffed in an attempt to get arrested, finally got his wish when he went for an officer's handgun. Unified police documents said the 54-year-old transient tried to turn himself in at the jail last weekend but an officer told him he had no reason to arrest him. At that point, police said the man grabbed for the officer's gun saying, "Maybe I'll try suicide by cop."

Police said he failed in getting the gun and he also changed his mind about wanting to go to jail because he began to resist.

The man, who was described as belligerent and appeared to be intoxicated, was subdued and jailed.

And he might have gotten more than he bargained for. Police said he was hit with several charges including a serious felony of disarming a peace officer.

If he was unable to get the gun, how can he be charged with "disarming a peace officer"?

LDS security halts armed man at Salt Lake City parking facility

By Bob Mims

The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 03/04/2010 01:37:57 PM MST

An armed man who tried to enter the LDS Church's downtown Salt Lake City parking facility was taken into custody and later admitted to a mental health facility for observation.

Sgt. Robin Snyder said the 30-year-old was stopped by Temple Square security officers when he attempted to drive into the restricted parking site about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. That was when officers noticed a pistol resting on the seat next to the man.

The man reportedly told the security officers that he wanted to speak to someone who was in church leadersship.

Snyder said the man was "very compliant with officers' requests" to exit the vehicle and did not reach for the gun at any time. LDS security then called Salt Lake City police, who questioned the man and determined he needed a psychological evaluation.

"It was the way he was talking," Snyder said, noting that because the man was not formally arrested, she could offer little more detail -- other than to say he was not threatening anyone.

The man, whose identity was not released, was committed to a minimum stay of 24 hours at University Hospital's mental health wing, Snyder said.

The gun was confiscated by police.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints declined to comment on the incident, referring questions to police.

BTW - The Legislatards have made it legal to drive around with a loaded gun on the seat.
