First.. When the upgrade is complete, for those of you with an iPhone, there is an app available for it..
There will also be quite a bit more integration with Facebook and Twitter, so that messages made here can easily be transferred over to your Facebook/Twitter accounts. You can read all the enhancements at

Ok.. So.. The server has bitten the big one.

It's being torn down and sent back to me, so I can go through it and try to find the issue and repair it.

Most likely, it's a drive failure. That's what it's looking like.. Paying 6 hours of labor for someone to reload it, when it shouldn't take an hour.. Not gonna happen.

So, assuming that's all it is.. We'll be back up at full power in a week or so.

If it's more.. We might be calling for some donations to purchase a new server. Used, of course, but.. Still looking at $500 or so.

So, everyone cross your fingers that it's just a failed drive. If that's it.. I'll upgrade it with new drives (redundant) and probably kick some more memory to it.

Oh.. And the rest of the data should be OK as well.. I just wasn't moving Gigs of data over to this temporary storage. So, avatars and the like aren't working at the moment.

Final Word: It started with a chance encounter and leftovers

By Craig Wilson, USA TODAY

This has been a year of milestones. My mom turned 90, I turned 60, and last week my partner, Jack, and I marked 25 years together. I'm not sure which of these events is more astounding. The last, perhaps.

I'll confess I love analyzing other people's lives. Probably why I became a journalist. (I know, I should mind my own business, but I don't get paid doing that.)

What makes one couple tick? What makes another couple fall apart? What in the world does she see in him is a question I ask on a daily basis.

I have been to weddings where I knew the couple wasn't going to make it to five years, let alone 25.

I also marvel at other couples who happily march through decades, hand in hand, their quirkiness perhaps gluing them together.

As we all know, no one knows what goes on in anyone else's relationship other than the two people involved. Probably just as well.

I met Jack on a Saturday afternoon strolling through the National Gallery of Art. It was Thanksgiving weekend, my parents had returned home to Upstate New York, and I had nothing to do but wander a city I had lived in only three months. I knew virtually no one.

We chatted, I invited him over for the Thanksgiving leftovers my mom had left behind, leftovers he later claimed were terrible.

Didn't seem to matter. Twenty-five years later, I'm eating his leftovers and very happy about it.

It all seemed easy, casual. Not even a "dating" period, per se. Before long I realized we were a couple. I met his friends. He met mine.

And we were lucky. We had supportive families.

I'm sure my family was just happy he had a job, didn't appear to be an ax murderer, and despite being from New Jersey, seemed quite a good guy. His family is still trying to figure me out.

I hope to give them another 25 years to do so.

We are opposites in many ways. Perhaps the cliché is true. A journalist and an epidemiologist. His deadlines are years away. Mine are daily. He's methodical. I'm impulsive. He cooks. I clean. He prepares taxes. I do not.

We have had our differences over the years, of course. What couple hasn't? Our worst fights have been in cars, even after the arrival of Miss Direction, our car's GPS.

But after 25 years, we have become a team, as longtime couples do. I can finish his sentences. He knows what I'm thinking, which I still find disconcerting.

Jack's parents were married for 44 years, mine for 54. Both marriages ended with the death of a partner, not divorce. No one walked away.

I'd like to think the same will be true for us.

He’s leaving CBS to launch MHMedia, based in Annapolis, and his client will be right there in Maryland’s capital city: Steve Kingston’s adult alternative WRNR (103.1). Hughes says he'll offer services ranging from revenue development and product branding to ideas about digital platforms and “overall asset value enrichment.” He previously managed or programmed for AMFM Inc. and Jacor before spending 10 years with CBS, based in Washington, D.C. Evidently can't come up with a idea to un-suck commercial radio, though. I see that the latest numbers put the Junkies at 15th, Arrington at 17th. No wonder he's running away for an easy paycheck.
So with the chorus only listed once, here are those words and see how you look at them now in light of CBS[UCKS] - [Shit hit] the FAN flip.

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance that I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver with every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep, I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside the day the music died.

So bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy was dry
And them good 'ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye singin'
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die.

Did you write the book of love, and do you have faith in God above?
If the Bible tells you so
Now do you believe in rock and roll, can music save your moral soul and
Can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well I know that you're in love with him 'cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes, man I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck, with a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck the day the music died.

Chorus

Now for ten years we've been on our own and moss grows, fat on a rolling stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen in a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh and while the king was looking down, the jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx, the quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark the day the music died

Chorus

Helter-skelter in a summer swelter the birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and fallin' fast, it landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass with the jester, on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume while sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance, oh but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field, the marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died.

Chorus

Oh, and there we were all in one place, a generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on Jack be nimble, Jack be quick, Jack Flash sat on a candlestick 'cause
Fire is the devil's only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage my hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in hell, could break that Satan's spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night, to light the sacrificial rite I saw
Satan laughing with delight the day the music died.

Chorus

I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store, where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play, mmm
And in the streets the children screamed, the lovers cried and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most: the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast the day the music died.

Chorus

For years now I have mad every effort to get out of work at 1500 or 3 PM local. This was very important as the first break was always the best, especially after a vacation or weekend. I knew that 30-50 minutes of laughter and merriment was to be mine, shared with the hundreds of thousands fellow commuters across the nation.

I would seek out the Don & Mike Show in whatever city I was traveling to, downloading the padcasts (or earlier, the 'Don't Talk About Fight Club).

Now I can take my time to answer email, check on my people, do paperwork, get gas, or WhatNot., as I just don't care....

I really like DonnieG's new show out in OXB. Mike O'Meara will hopefully land a gig in this area soon.
Til then, I finally will get my paperwork done in time....

Let me offer this...

Okay, I've never posted here before and activated an account just to get this off my chest, even if 1) Nobody reads or comments on it, or 2) All I get is ridicule and message board nastiness for posting it...so here goes:

I've been listening to WJFK, I would guess, for the better part of 15 years. I have not changed the dial position once in at least ten. No reason whatsoever to listen to any other terrestrial station out there. I first started listening to WJFK via The Greaseman, I'm ashamed to say...at such an early age, I guess, that juvenile type of comedy appealed to me. I still remember the Tuna Fish song word for word. And then my brother got me listening to Don and Mike on the way to karate class. At first, I hated them. But after a little while, my brother had moved on and I was the one listening religiously, every hour that I could catch after missing the beginning of the show each day due to school. Eventually, I graduated (just barely) and with the addition of Ron and Fez, first in overnights and then immediately following D&M, I was listening to WJFK every day for a bare minimum of 8 hours a day. I even have fond memories of all the crap shows--Unzipped with Michelle and Checkoway, G. Gordon Liddy, Goss's Garage, Tech Radio, "Capital Critters" as Don used to refer to it, with Buzz Burbank early Sunday mornings; all the shitty, fly-by-night, cash-for-airtime weekend shows, even the bizarrely out of place "Mystery Theatre" show they used to run many years ago (a radio play of some sort) on Saturday afternoons...the list goes on and on. Of course, the third show in the holy trinity for me personally would be the last great program the station had--The Hideout with El Jefe and J-Dubs. There was a golden age of WJFK when Don and Mike, Ron and Fez and The Hideout were on back to back to back...and of course the disorder and disarray of the year or so when Don and Mike made their move on New York and gave up their afternoon drive spot to Opie and Anthony. But through it all, I was listening. The point is, as stupid as it sounds (after all, one should not, ideally, devote this much sentiment towards a thing like a radio station or show), WJFK and it's shows over the years accounts for a very positive and enduring part of my childhood and adolescence.

Even though the new show did not and could not 'live up' to the old Don&Mike show, it was something to hold on to--something to preserve those great memories of the Don and Mike show. Furthermore, the return to form represented in the 'live and local' programming of The Junkies, Big O and Dukes and Mike O'Meara, was very comforting in the wake of all that was lost when Don left. So, though I can't say I was a huge fan of any of the aforementioned programs, I'm extremely sad to see it all go away. There was a certain charm to Joe Ardinger and his Joe Radio, and much like the Mike O'Meara show kept a slow simmer going after the fire had all but been extinguished, the Saturday night Hideout that preceded Joe was something to hold on to. If you listened to WJFK with any regularity, you definitely saw this coming from several miles away, but like the death of a grandparent, it's still a bit of a surprise.

So, I have no life. I barely made it through high school, flunked out of three different colleges, and I've had more setbacks and disappointments than I would wish on anyone of only 26 years. But through all of it, WJFK was there. Well, I guess you've got to move on...it's ridiculous, to say the least, that the change of a radio station's format should bring to mind all of the sentiment that it does. But, here it is. I've still got Ron and Fez (never been a fan of O&A), but with the new corporate environment they've found themselves in, I suspect it won't last much longer. There was a time in radio, and in the history of this station in particular, that it seemed the inmates ran the asylum. Things are very different now. And while I hold out hope that Jefe will come to his senses and get The Hideout back together, or Don will tire of spinning old Beach Boys records and take the whole gang to satellite for a new start, I know it would never be the same. So, the time has come to lay to rest this part of my life. Good luck to everybody, and thanks for the memories--Don, Mike, Ron, Fez, Jefe, Dubs, Mr. Liddy, EB, Cakes, Lurch and JP--everyone who made WJFK what it was, for better or worse.

I only have one question...

Thank you all for the mameries. I hope that the show continues on somwhere somehow but I think, no I know you can stick a fork in it.

Thank you all here for the witty banter.

God bless you and

GOD BLESS DON AND MIKE!!

It better not be...

I felt the Mike O'Meara show was really hitting a good stride and I looked forward to it everyday. But for the first time I am worried, and I hoep it is just gas from lunch, however I got:

* All the sports flip talk over the past few months....
* DCRTV Dickhead posting today, (but for the 10th time) that JFK is flipping during the July 4 break
* The MOM Show Twitter this morning: "Weekend Stories...Latest On The Death Of Billy Mays...And More Starting At 3 This Afternoon.."

Combined with the unannounced rerun/Best Of today..

Me scared....Me worried, and I hope it is just nothing.

If it does, this sucks b/c to add salt into the wound Doni is on the radio but we can't hear him...
